There are benefits to writing out your thoughts and feelings without holding back - without inhibition or shame for how it sounds or what people would think. You can say anything. You can work out some deep dark shit and organize your silly, crazy, disturbed, depressed, anxious, happy, or even subtly suicidal thoughts without judgement (side note - nearly everyone has thought about it in some way, shape or form). It’s interesting what comes out. It’s more interesting to read it after. There’s an odd clarity that comes from seeing what you think in black and white. Even more beneficial is coming back to it days, weeks, years later to find out how crazy you are (that’s a joke, albeit not a good one). Don’t like writing? Not ‘good’ at it? So what, it’s not the point. The point is to get it out of your brain and onto the page so you can look it dead in the face.
